Massive: Green Bay Packers’ detail Plans for the WR Room going Forward

How Will the Green Bay Packers Improve Their WR Room?

The Green Bay Packers are coming off an incredible season after almost beating the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.

While things are on an upward trajectory for Matt LaFleur, Jordan Love, and the rest of the Packers, there are still areas that need to be improved if they want to compete for a Super Bowl.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) completes a pass to running back Aaron Jones (33) during the second quarter of their NFC divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Levi’ Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Some will definitely point to the wide receiver room as one area that could use a bit of a boost. While they performed well against the Packers, they did falter a bit when it mattered most as Brock Purdy and the Niners mounted a surprising comeback.

How will LaFleur and the Packers’ front office–led by Brian Gutekunst– retool an already-solid WR into something better?

LaFleur, Green Bay Packers’ detail plans for the WR room

Packers Wire’s Paul Bretl published a detailed article on the current status of the Packers’ wide receiver room and what should be expected going forward.

He wrote that the Green Bay Packers have a  good enough group of WRs without any impending free-agency issues that they could work with this current pool of talent:

If the Packers didn’t make a single addition at receiver, they would be more than fine. The soonest free agent of the Packers six receivers who were on the 53-man roster is Bo Melton, who is under contract through 2024. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs still have two years remaining on their rookie deals.

He also detailed that they could work on their depth through the draft:

With 11 draft picks, perhaps the Packers take a late-round swing on a receiver-at that stage of the game it’s all about drafting upside versus positional value.

Christian Watson: key man in Green Bay Packers’ 2024 game plan

In the same article, Christian Watson’s health is a key factor in the team’s success for next season.

Bretl wrote of the Green Bay Packers’ gameplan for Watson as well as his value to the team:

On two separate occasions this season, he was sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Packers will be sending him to the University of Wisconsin to see a hamstring specialist. In addition to the big play ability that Watson brings to the offense, he has a gravity about him, that draws defenders his way, which then creates opportunities for others within the offense.

Watson only played nine games for the Packers this season, but he finished with a respectable 422 receiving yards on 28 catches and five TDs.

If the Packers manage to solve Watson’s long-term health, he’ll be a critical weapon for Jordan Love come the postseason.
