Jazz hits double, triple on Mother’s Day
Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado ‘Jazz’ Chisholm Jr. and the Miami Marlins ended a five-game losing streak on Sunday, walking it off against the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
It was a Mother’s Day celebration for the Marlins, winning 7-6 on a game-winning single from pinch hitter Emmanuel Rivera in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Chisholm had a special performance at the plate, banging out two hits for the second consecutive day. He had two singles in five at-bats on Saturday and connected for a double and a triple in three at-bats on Sunday. He finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored on Sunday.
In his first at-bat in the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Chisholm grounded out to Phillies’ first baseman Alec Bohm. The Marlins trailed 3-0 early before storming back in the second, third and fourth innings. The Bahamian got in on the action in the bottom of the third inning, starting the proceedings for the Marlins with a double on a sharp fly ball to center field. Chisholm jumped on the first pitch he saw in the at-bat, a 94.3 miles per hour (mph) four-seam fastball off Phillies’ starter Zack Wheeler, and drove it to center field. He scored on a three-run home run from Josh Bell and the Marlins took their first lead of the game, 4-3.
Just one inning later, the electrifying Bahamian center fielder drove a pitch to right field over the outstretched arm of Phillies’ right fielder Nick Castellanos. He motored around the bases and slid into third with his second triple of the year, both coming in the month of May. Chisholm’s shot drove in Otto Lopez and the Marlins took a 6-3 lead.
Chisholm was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth and walked and was stranded in the bottom of the ninth.
Meanwhile, the Phillies battled back with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, 6-6, where it remained at the end of nine complete innings, setting up the heroics from the Marlins in the 10th inning – their third walk-off win of the season.
For the season, Chisholm is batting .252 with five home runs, 21 RBIs (runs batted in) and 18 runs scored. He also has eight stolen bases on the season, a .331 on-base percentage (OBP), and a slugging percentage of .430 for an on-base plus slugging percentage of .761.
Defensively, Chisholm has 97 put outs in 97 chances this season for a clean 1.000 fielding percentage.
The Marlins have an 11-31 win/loss record in the National League East Division of Major League Baseball (MLB). They are already 17 and a half games behind the Phillies (28-13).
Chisholm and the Marlins begin a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, today. The game today will get underway at 6:40 p.m. The Marlins will be off on Thursday and will host division rival, the New York Mets, in a three-game series on the weekend.
