Just-in: Miami might not have to look far to obtain top wide receiver talent
Miami did a good job of adding talent at wide receiver in the Class of 2024.
After bringing in a trio of blue-chip pass catchers in Joshisa Trader, Ny Carr, and Chance Robinson, wide receivers coach Kevin Beard, assistant wide receivers coach Donovan Varner, analyst David Cooney, and the Hurricanes staff are looking to bring in another strong class.
Five takeaways from Miami’s win at Notre Dame
Five takeaways from the Miami Hurricanes’ 73-61 win at Notre Dame on Wednesday.
The Miami Hurricanes won 73-61 at Notre Dame on Wednesday.
Miami improved to 13-6 on the season, 4-4 in the ACC.
This win was much-needed even against a struggling Notre Dame team that was last in the conference in offensive efficiency in league games. Still, Miami had lost their last two, including the last one at Syracuse at the buzzer, and four of their last five, dropping to ninth in the standings at 3-4. The win will not vault them into the top group, but it was needed just to get a positive feeling back for their second victory in three weeks.
It was also a needed win on the road as they improved to 2-2 in ACC road games. And it was earned. Notre Dame went ahead by 3 with nine minutes left with an energized crowd behind them. But Miami stayed poised and put together a 17-2 run to propel them to a win. It started with their defense on a steal by Norchad Omier and ending with a layup by Bensley Joseph and the 3 by Wooga Poplar put them back on top and they never looked back from there.
Norchad Omier returned to the court after missing the last game with an ankle injury and dominated with arguably his best performance of the season, scoring a season-high 33 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Omier is the Hurricanes’ leading scorer this season and they are a much better team when he is aggressive on the offensive end and getting his shots with teammates looking for him. When he scores at least 16 points this season, the Hurricanes are 9-2 (and were 11-1 last season) compared to 4-3 when he does not and 0-1 when he does not play. Also, they are 8-1 when Omier attempts at least 11 field goals in a game and were 9-2 last season.
His dominant performance included making 12 of 14 from the field and was 10 for 10 at the rim with six dunks. He was excellent at putting pressure on his defenders either by putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket or just putting up shots quickly to make him even harder to defend.
He also knocked down a pair of 3-pointers with one to open the scoring and got to the free-throw line nine times. And because his scoring was so high, his other contributions were easy to overlook, but he once again led all players in rebounding and had three steals. He did have a team-high five turnovers, which is high, but he did so many other things at a high level that it did not affect his performance.
Moving forward, it is important to keep Omier heavily involved offensively even though the offense is geared towards having the guards get their shots.
