MLB Most Controversial Deal: Red Sox Remain Favorites for $200M Star Despite One Big Issue Holding…See More

What is happening with Alex Bregman, who was once the most sought-after player in the market? The Houston Astros player is still available on the free market. The third baseman had a nine-year run with the team. Though whispers of a potential return to Houston lingered, those whispers have died. The door to a Bregman reunion is now seemingly closed with the squad signing and trading new players.

MLB insider Jon Heyman has remarked on where Bregman might land next. Heyman has pinpointed a surprising contender as the best fit. The Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox seem to be his top choices. That being said, the insider didn’t rule out the Mets yet. So there are three teams that will fit the 30-year-old, but whether they will make an offer is still a lingering question.

Heyman thinks Alex Bregman will be a Red Sox player

While the Red Sox might be the most fit for Alex Bregman’s services, there is one small hiccup. According to Heyman, the reason for this setback is on the Red Sox players. Heyman said, “I still think the best opportunities are probably the Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers.” I’ve kind of seen where the Red Sox were split on it. I think the reason has to be, and I’m mostly speculating, that Rafael Devers wants to stay at third base. That could be the only reason to me. You switch Devers to first base, Bregman, and that ballpark fits Boston so well, and that is really the best spot for him.”

But what Heyman didn’t consider is the fact that the third baseman has also openly expressed that if the ‘right’ situation comes, he will be willing to change positions. That will solve the Red Sox’s problem, won’t it? Devers would not have to change positions, and everyone could be happy. The Red Sox also seem happy with Devers in 3B. Craig Breslow recently told WEEI’s Jones and Keefe that Rafael Devers is our third baseman, and we are really excited about that. Other than the Red Sox, Jon Heyman didn’t rule the Mets out as a suitable option. Let us see how that would work out.

The Mets are still a possible landing spot

What’s your perspective on:

Will Alex Bregman be the Red Sox’s missing piece, or is he better suited for the Mets?

Debate

For any team, Alex Bregman might be a game-changer. The 30-year-old recorded a good season with 242 assists and an incredible 103 putouts and a fielding percentage of 972. In addition, Bergman received his first-ever gold glove. Bregman may not have been playing at his best offensively, but he still hit 26 home runs. The former Astros player proved to us throughout 145 games that he is still a top contributor even during a “down” season.

Bregman would add a dynamic bat to the top of the lineup for teams like the Mets. But Pete Alonso’s time in New York might come to an end with the addition of Bregman. The third baseman is probably going to sign a $200 million multi-year contract. That is a significant amount that may require the Mets to reallocate funds and eliminate Alonso. That would also require the squad to move the younger, less expensive Mark Vientos to first base.

The whole scene in the market for first basemen has dramatically shifted over the past week. Big names like Paul Goldschmidt, Carlos Santana, and Christian Walker have all found new homes. Perhaps the Mets could re-sign Pete Alonso to a team-friendly deal. Then the club would keep Mark Vientos at third rather than breaking the bank on Bregman. Either way, one thing is for certain: the Mets are going to land themselves another superstar, whether it’s locking up Alonso or Bregman.
