New York Giants Legend Gets Brutally Honest With Saquon Barkley Amid Messy Contract Dispute

New York Giants Legend Gets Real With Saquon Barkley Amid Messy Contract Dispute

Contract disputes are a part of the NFL offseason, and it’s the New York Giants’ turn on the hot seat.

The team’s ongoing contract-related feud with Saquon Barkley has captured the attention of many Giants fans, and many are sure that the matter will likely end up in a painful parting.

While many commend Saquon Barkley’s determination to play for the Giants, one of the team’s most respected players got frank with him and advised him to take a step back and consider his dilemma from the team’s point of view.

Carl Banks advises Saquon Barkley to accept less money to play for the New York Giants

Former Giants LB Carl Banks talked about Saquon’s situation on the Bleav in Giants podcast recently. He suggested that taking less money to play for the team is not that terrible of a decision.

Penn Live’s Brian Linder reports about Banks’ take on the situation:

“The only way that your value and your brand value stays high is to do the game that you love, that you’re great at,” he added. “The system is what has suppressed running back salaries. He’s not alone … sitting out doesn’t send a message. It won’t change the system.”

Banks wasn’t through.

“I am saying this to you: Don’t be a principled fool,” he said. “And I say that because, you could sit at home and nobody is paying the price. The games are going to start on time. Training camp won’t stop because you’re not there. Come in with your integrity intact and be enthusiastic. Be angry — you should be angry.”

Banks’ words suggest that he clearly understands where Barkley is coming from. The fact that he could still post 962 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on 3.9 yards per attempt is nothing short of incredible for him. His solid 2023 numbers is enough for certain NFL teams to want him in their roster.

However, he cannot deny that he’s been something of a glass cannon for the New York Giants. A team will naturally hesitate to pay big money for an excellent player that will only be available about half the time.
