Nick Nurse Opens up on Impressive Late-Game Performance From Tyrese Maxey
Over the course of this season, Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has shown improvements in multiple areas. Among the most notable stages of his development is his ability to provide a big scoring punch late in games.
On Friday night, the Sixers needed another strong fourth quarter in their matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After having just nine points through three quarters, the first-time All-Star erupted for 15 en route to a win.
In total, Maxey finished the game with a team-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Following the game, head coach Nick Nurse opened up on what he saw from Maxey down the stretch.
“I just think that he was having one of those games where we were getting a good dose of offense from some other people. And he was okay with that, but I said the same at the half,” Maxey said. “I said I think we’re in good shape here because Tyrese [Maxey] hasn’t really engaged offensively, I am pretty sure he’s going to. We obviously made a lot of big buckets down the stretch, so I think he did it right tonight.”
In terms of fourth quarter scoring, Maxey is among the top performers in the NBA. The only players with more points than him in the final period are Giannis Antetokounmpo, Trae Young, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and De’Aaron Fox.
With Joel Embiid still recovering from a knee injury, Maxey has been called upon to lead the charge for the Sixers. The 23-year-old is continuing his breakout campaign, posting averages of 25.8 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 6.4 APG.
