Disheartening: Ankle surgery will be performed on a key Knicks Player
The other day, New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson left the game against the Boston Celtics due to “left ankle inflammation.”
Apparently, the injury is quite a bit worse than that.
Ian Begley is reporting that Robinson will have left ankle surgery this week and will be re-evaluated in 8-10 weeks.
Obviously, this is not the sort of news the Knicks want.
Robinson experienced the injury during the first half of Friday’s game but then tried to return to the court after halftime.
But it was clear that something was really bothering Robinson and he couldn’t stay on the floor.
The center has started in all 21 games so far this season, averaging 6.2 points and a strong 10.3 rebounds per game.
Now that he’s out for the foreseeable future, he will likely be replaced by Isaiah Hartenstein, who has been posting 5.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Jericho Sims, who hasn’t been in the rotation that much this season, might also get a chance to step up and play more.
The Knicks are set to play against the Toronto Raptors on Monday night, which will give them the first taste of a starting lineup without Robinson.
Eight to ten weeks is a long time and it means Knicks fans won’t be seeing Robinson again until February, at the earliest.
That is a long time for any team, especially the Knicks since they are competing in a very tough conference and are trying to climb higher than their current 12-9 record.
Hopefully, Robinson is the only key player the team is losing.
The other night, Jalen Brunson suffered an ankle sprain but he is apparently ready to play on Monday night.
