The Penguins have recalled forward Alex Nylander from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Alex Nylander from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) Sunday evening.
This marks the second time this season Nylander has been summoned to the NHL roster. Previously recalled Nov. 22, Nylander has appeared in three NHL games this season and has no points while averaging 15:25 of ice time per contest.
At the AHL level, Nylander has produced 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 14 games.
A right-handed shot, Nylander is signed to a one-year contract worth $775,000, the NHL minimum.
This transaction comes on the same day the team placed forward Matt Nieto on injured reserve retroactive to Friday. Nieto and fellow fourth-liner Noel Acciari each missed Saturday’s 4-3 home shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers due to undisclosed ailments. Neither player participated in a practice session in Cranberry on Sunday. Coach Mike Sullivan did not provide a substantive update on their statuses and indicated each player was still being evaluated.
With Nylander recalled to the NHL roster, the Penguins will have a spare 13th forward available for an upcoming three-game road trip.

Penguins recall Alex Nylander again; Nieto update
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Alex Nylander.
Nylander played three games alongside Evgeni Malkin in lieu of the injured Rickard Rakell but made no impact, recording no points. Nylander’s recall expired last week, but he could be called up again starting Monday when the Penguins play the Philadelphia Flyers.
Coach Mike Sullivan was nice but candid in explaining why the Penguins terminated Nylander’s first recall of the season.
“I still think he’s a very young player,” Sullivan said. “I think Alex is a really talented player. I think the biggest thing he needs to do is to bring a certain element of consistency to his game and make an impact.”
Nylander did not have a point in three NHL games. He has 10 points (5-5-10) in 14 AHL games with the WBS Penguins this season.
Matt Nieto’s status necessitated the recall. The Penguins’ actions offered a partial update. The team placed him on the injured reserve.
Players on IR must be out for seven days. The team’s announcement did not specify if Nieto was retroactively placed on IR. He did not play in the Penguins 4-3 shootout loss to the Flyers on Saturday.
