It’s been a wretched Premier League Darts campaign so far for Peter Wright but the legendary Scot plans to qualify again for a swansong in 2025. The 54-year-old has won just two of his 17 league clashes heading into the final meeting in Sheffield this Thursday and lies bottom of the table with his play-off hopes having long disappeared.

Wright has been a shadow of the figure who has previously claimed two world titles and has attributed his struggles to having to wear glasses during games for the first time in his career. Selection for next year’s version currently looks in serious doubt, but ’Snakebite’ believes he can make the cut if he can somehow add to his eight major PDC tournament wins.

“If I win a major and they select me next year, that will probably be my last Premier League,” he said in an interview with Oche180. “I’m going to do my best to say goodbye with a win.

“If I win a major and they pick me next year that will probably be my last Premier League. I’ll try my hardest to go out with a win. I’m getting older and all the travelling is tough. I’d concentrate on all the other tournaments. Let these other youngsters like Joe Cullen and Chris Dobey get their chance.”

Wright’s last major success came in the 2023 European Championship last October, but he backed himself to bounce back from a ‘disaster’ of a season to land another big tournament win. “Is it the end? No,” he insisted.

“I believe I can win a major this year, definitely. Obviously we’ve got some fantastic players at the moment, the two Lukes and Gary Anderson. I’ve got a few months yet to win majors. I’ll get myself ready for that. It’s been a disaster this year in the Premier League for me.”

Wright’s hopes of bowing out from this season in style at the Utilita Arena this week have already been dealt a blow. He’ll have to overcome league leader Luke Littler just to make the final four, with the teenager now the favourite to prevail on finals night in London on May 23.
