The Phillies’ star slugger has been mentioned as a possible Red Sox offseason free agent target.
The Boston Red Sox are likely to be looking for a right-handed bat in the center of the lineup. The Red Sox could lose both outfielder Adam Duvall and designated hitter Justin Turner in free agency, necessitating the need for a right-handed bat. There’s always the possibility that Turner or Duvall will return, but at this time, it appears doubtful. If they don’t, there are some intriguing free agent right-handed bats available.
The Red Sox’s potential offseason targets were gathered by MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith, and one name that jumped out was Philadelphia Phillies batter Rhys Hoskins.
“Hoskins didn’t play for the Phillies in 2023 after tearing his ACL during spring training,” Smith told ESPN. “He’ll be 31 in March and already has a job.”845 OPS. In each of his four full seasons in the majors, he has hit 27 or more home runs. He, like (Lourdes Gurriel Jr.), has only played in left field in his major league career. However, he could also play first base and (designated hitter).”
Hoskins was dependable before to missing the 2023 season. He has hit at least 27 home runs and driven in at least 71 runs in each of the last four full seasons (excluding the 2020 abbreviated season). Throughout his Major League Baseball career, he has played first base, left field, and designated hitter. If the Red Sox lose Turner in free agency, Hoskins may be the type of player to chase on a lower salary with excellent promise.
Boston’s attack was already outstanding in 2023, but a little more pop in the middle of the lineup wouldn’t hurt.
