Pitcher Frankie Montas has agreed to a one-year, $16 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds

According to a person familiar with the negotiations, Frankie Montas and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a $16 million, one-year contract, giving the 30-year-old right-hander a chance to restart his career after an injury-plagued stint with the New York Yankees.

Because the arrangement was contingent on a successful physical, the source talked to the AP on the condition of anonymity on Saturday.

On August 1, 2022, the Yankees acquired Montas from Oakland along with reliever Lou Trivino for four prospects. Montas finished 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts for New York that year, confessing subsequently that he wasn’t feeling well.

On Feb. 21, he underwent labrum surgery with Los Angeles Dodgers senior team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache and made his only big league appearance of the season on Sept. 30. Montas earned the win in a 5-2 victory over Kansas City on the season’s final day, retiring four batters while surrendering two hits and a walk.

Montas has a career record of 37-35 with a 3.90 ERA in 99 starts and 31 relief appearances with the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland (2017-22), and the Yankees.

He had a $7.5 million salary last season in his last year of arbitration eligibility.
