Predicted Newcastle XI to face Blackburn… Eddie Howe makes Joe Willock decision, 23-year-old changes position
Newcastle United are now preparing for a season-defining FA Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers.
After a disastrous display away to Arsenal in the Premier League, Newcastle must shift their focus towards the cup.
It is the one thing that can save the 2023/24 season for Eddie Howe, as his side take on Championship outfit Blackburn for a place in the FA Cup quarter finals.
It is a must-win game, and this is the starting XI we predict Howe to pick for Blackburn Rovers vs Newcastle United
Dan Burn returns vs Blackburn
Howe dropped Dan Burn to the bench against Arsenal, but he feels likely to return to the starting XI at Ewood Park.
That will mean Tino Livramento dropping back out, unless Howe decides to give Kieran Trippier a rest. However, that feels unlikely given the severity of the game.
Joe Willock on Newcastle’s bench again
The only positive to come out of Newcastle’s defeat to Arsenal was the return of Joe Willock.
The 24-year-old made his long awaited comeback from an Achilles problem, and he certainly looked lively against his former club.
He marked his return with a goal, and he will be keen to get more minutes under his belt. However, it still feels too early for him to start.
That means Howe will have to continue with a midfield three which is really struggling to gel.
One change in attack for crucial FA Cup encounter
Alexander Isak is back from injury, but was largely anonymous at the Emirates Stadium. He will hope for more joy in Lancashire on Tuesday night.
The Swede will be joined by Anthony Gordon in attack, and we believe he may be asked to switch roles.
That is because we predict Harvey Barnes to start ahead of Miguel Almiron, which will force Gordon to move to the right.
But the 23-year-old is just as capable on that flank, and Toon fans will be intrigued to see what this front three is capable of.
