Could the Red Sox make a surprise move soon? The Red Sox are reportedly considering making a surprise Move for a Superstar Pitcher
Boston could end up surprising some people this offseason still
The Boston Red Sox may end up surprising some people throughout the rest of the offseason.
Boston needs to add to the starting rotation still. That much is clear. While that is the case, it isn’t clear how they will do so. A move for a mid-tier free-agent option like James Paxton or Mike Clevinger may end up being the most likely move.
This is true, but there are some top options still available in free agency. Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still are available and with each passing day, it seems more likely that their asking prices will go down.
A move still should be considered unlikely, but Boston still has been “loosely linked” to Snell as a possible option to improve the rotation, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
“The (Toronto Blue Jays), (New York Mets), and Red Sox have also been loosely connected to Snell at different points during the offseason, but none have been willing to meet Snell’s asking price,” Feinsand said. “If that ask comes down, one American League executive predicted that multiple clubs could throw their hat in the ring – which could result in a bidding war that would benefit Snell in the end.”
Landing Snell would be a massive move for Boston. It would be expensive, but it would show that the Red Sox are serious about improving the club and spending big.
Boston certainly could afford a deal for Snell but at this point hasn’t budged. There still is time left in the offseason, though. Maybe the Red Sox will surprise us.

One of the top free-agent starting pitchers is still looking for a new home.
Former New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers hurler Jordan Montgomery has been one of the most sought-after free-agent pitchers this offseason.
While this is the case, Montgomery hasn’t found a new home yet. The fact that he’s looking for a massive deal paired with the fact that free agency has been extremely slow is the reason why he’s still available.
He certainly will sign at some point in the not-so-distant future and the Boston Red Sox, Yankees, and Rangers are among the clubs who have shown interest in a possible deal, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
“A local barbecue joint located near Globe Life Field has even done its part in trying to lure Montgomery back to Texas, offering the left-hander free BBQ for life if he re-ups with the Rangers,” Feinsand said. “So why hasn’t it happened? Montgomery could simply be falling victim to a market that – outside of the (Los Angeles Dodgers) – has seemingly been hesitant to make big deals.
“The Rangers make the most sense for Montgomery, who has also been connected to the Yankees, Red Sox, (Philadelphia Phillies), (Los Angeles Angels), and (San Francisco Giants) in recent weeks. A reunion between Montgomery and the Yankees appears to be a long shot at this point, though the other clubs could still be in play. That said, a return to Texas remains the most logical and likely conclusion to Montgomery’s free agency.”
Landing someone like Montgomery would be an awesome addition for Boston this offseason but it sounds like it would have a lot of competition for his services. Plus, it’s unclear how much the Red Sox are willing to spend.
