Dallas Mavericks Reports: Klay Thompson is ‘Expected’ to Start at Small Forward and Get Guaranteed Minutes in 2024-25
The Athletic’s Shams Charania recently revealed that Klay Thompson is expected to be the Dallas Mavericks’ starting small forward in the 2024-25 campaign.
“He’s going to be their starting three,” Charania said about Thompson during his Monday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. “He’s gonna be a guaranteed starter. He’s gonna have guaranteed minutes there and an opportunity to play.”
Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks this summer via a sign-and-trade agreement, where he’ll receive $50 million for the next three seasons. The 34-year-old is coming off a down year by his lofty standards, as he averaged 17.9 points per game, his lowest scoring average in 10 years, on 43.2 percent shooting from the field and 38.7 from three-point range.
The four-time NBA champion is expected to play a supporting role alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Klay Thompson should be a solid floor-spacer who doesn’t need the ball in his hands much.
However, Thompson’s ability to play defense at a high level as a starter will be one of the team’s question marks because of his injury history in recent years. Last season, the Dallas Mavericks had Derrick Jones Jr., but the former NBA Slam Dunk champion has moved to the Los Angeles Clippers on a three-year, $30 million contract.
Dallas Mavericks GM believes that Klay Thompson might be the missing piece
Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison couldn’t be more excited about adding Klay Thompson, as he thinks he can help them push over the top.
“It was a no-brainer for us, especially after The Finals. We knew that we were a Klay Thompson away,” Harrison said about Thompson during the Dallas Mavericks’ Summer League opener on Saturday.
The Dallas Mavericks did more than add Klay Thompson this offseason, as they traded Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Quentin Grimes, and they also brought in Naji Marshall from the New Orleans Pelicans.
