After Ajax’s victory, Roberto De Zerbi delivers an injury report on the Brighton & Hove Albion three.
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi has said he is “worried” about the club’s developing injury concerns after Lewis Dunk, James Milner, and Pervis Estupinan were all forced off in the club’s 2-0 Europa League win over Ajax on Thursday.
Ansu Fati and Simon Adingra each had a goal and an assist to enable a clinical Seagulls side earn all three points and enhance their chances of moving to the knockout stages.
However, the victory in Amsterdam was tarnished by the loss of three senior figures, with Milner the first to go after only eight minutes due to a knock.
Dunk was subsequently replaced at halftime after undergoing treatment for a groin injury in the dying parts of the first half, while Estupinan, who was returning from a five-week muscle injury layoff, lasted only 12 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
In an interview with TNT Sports following the game, De Zerbi remarked of the injured trio, “I’m very worried about the injuries, but it’s a problem we’re finding right now.”
“We have a lot of injuries, especially at full-back.” We need to find another option because we have another important game [against Sheffield United] on Sunday and we want to win.”
De Zerbi was particularly asked if Dunk will be fit for selection against the Blades, and the Italian is optimistic that the Brighton skipper has not suffered a catastrophic injury.
“I don’t know [about Dunk] at the moment,” De Zerbi continued. “I don’t think it’s a big deal, but he’s played so many games in a row.” We need to learn more about the [injury].”
Dunk, Milner, and Estupinan are the latest names to join Solly March, Danny Welbeck, Tariq Lamptey, Julio Enciso, and Jakub Moder in the Brighton treatment room.
March and Enciso are both out for the long term due to knee problems, while Moder has been out for the last 18 months due to a knee problem of his own, though the midfielder has begun to regain match fitness with the club’s Under-21s.
Welbeck has missed the last four games due to a muscle ailment and faces a protracted layoff, whereas Lamptey may be able to return after the international break provided he fully recovers from an unexplained problem.
Despite the injuries, De Zerbi was “delighted” with Brighton’s win over Ajax, which has helped them ascend to second position in Group B of the Europa League, one point behind top-placed Marseille and three ahead of third-placed AEK Athens with two games remaining.
