The trade, finalized just ahead of the winter meetings, has sent shockwaves across the MLB landscape. Robert, 26, is coming off a stellar season in which he smashed 38 home runs, batted .290, and stole 10 bases, all while providing elite defense in center field. His combination of power, speed, and Gold Glove-caliber defense made him one of the most coveted players on the market. The Astros, known for their ability to develop and optimize talent, see Robert as a perfect fit for their championship aspirations.
For the White Sox, the trade marks the continuation of their rebuilding process. In exchange for Robert, the Astros sent a package of top prospects and major league-ready players, including outfielder Corey Julks, left-handed pitcher C.J. Stubbs, and two additional prospects, though the full details remain under wraps. The White Sox will look to reshape their roster around younger talent as they move toward the future.
The addition of Robert solidifies the Astros’ outfield, alongside veterans Kyle Tucker and Michael Brantley. With Robert now in the fold, Houston boasts one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball, with formidable power hitters like Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, and José Abreu, ensuring that opposing pitchers will have little room for error.
The trade also signals the Astros’ continued commitment to winning in the short term while keeping their window of contention wide open. With a lineup that now features one of the game’s brightest young stars, Houston has once again positioned itself as a top contender for the 2024 World Series.
Crochet is almost guaranteed to be traded this winter. Robert is more of a wild card considering he was tremendous in 2023 but took a major step back in 2024.
Robert saw his production drop across the board with his OPS dropping .200 in 2024 compared to 2023. Still, he has more trade value than most and the White Sox are likely to explore moving him this winter.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden agrees, recently listing Robert as a potential trade candidate this winter, even drawing a few connections to teams around the league.
“The White Sox claim they want to build around him, but let’s be realistic: Luis Robert Jr. will turn 28 next August, he’s already halfway through his prime years and will be a free agent after the 2027 season,” Bowden wrote. “His trade value is high and the White Sox need to take advantage of it. If they can get seven solid-to-great prospects for both Crochet and Robert, their rebuild timeline could be expedited by two to three years. The (Philadelphia) Phillies, (Boston) Red Sox, and (Houston) Astros make a lot of sense as trade partners for Chicago.”
The Phillies have long been connected to Robert, dating back to early June when the first trade rumors began swirling around his name. As the Phillies are looking for a serious roster shakeup, this move could make a lot of sense.
The Red Sox are looking to add pitching and a right-handed bat, so they could be a candidate to make a blockbuster deal acquiring both Robert and Crochet in one trade. If not, they will continue to be linked as a landing spot for either star.
