Cavaliers Lose To 76ers But Almost Pull Off An Incredible Comeback
The Cleveland Cavaliers’ nine-game winning streak came to an end on Monday night, as they fell to the Philadelphia 76ers by a score of 123-121.
This defeat also ended the Wine and Gold’s nine-game home winning streak.
However, Cleveland nearly conquered overwhelming odds with a comeback effort in the game’s final minutes, but Darius Garland missed a game-winning three-point attempt as time expired.
With just 1:25 remaining, the Cavaliers trailed the 76ers 120-110 following a three-pointer from Kelly Oubre Jr. According to ESPN, Philadelphia had a 99.1% win probability at this point in the contest.
But a three-pointer from Garland on the ensuing possession began a 9-0 Cleveland run. After a 76ers timeout, Donovan Mitchell stole an errant inbounds pass, which he quickly turned into a three-point play. Then, the Wine and Gold’s defense forced a shot clock violation to give the Cavaliers the ball back with 29.1 seconds left.
A pair of missed three-pointers and offensive rebounds later, Mitchell drained a triple to make it a 120-119 game with 14 seconds remaining. This shot decreased Philadelphia’s win probability to 70.4%.
The two teams eventually traded a pair of free throws each before Tyrese Maxey was intentionally fouled with 6.2 seconds left. After splitting two free throws, the 76ers led 123-121.
On the game’s final possession, Mitchell rebounded his own blocked game-tying layup attempt and passed the ball to Garland for a game-winning three-point attempt, which ended up short.
After the game, Cavaliers Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff discussed his team’s furious late-game comeback attempt.
