Will the Arizona Cardinals ever really be good? Good question

Note: I’m Bill Goodykoontz, the media columnist for The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com — and now, new host of Valley 101. I’ve lived in Arizona for 34 years, and I’m hoping to bring some of that experience, along with my curiosity and connections with longtime residents, to the podcast. And to have a lot of fun.

The Arizona Cardinals have been in the Valley since 1988, and for most of those 36 years one thing has remained consistent about them: They haven’t been very good.

Some rare seasons were exceptions; they once even made it to the Super Bowl (and almost won it). There have been flashes of something better than mediocrity here and there, but for the most part, it’s been a long, hard slog for the team — and its fans.

Maybe there is hope on the horizon, with stars like quarterback Kyler Murray and top pick Marvin Harrison Jr. Or maybe that hope will fade like it has so many times before.

This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, I talked with Bob McManaman, a columnist for The Arizona Republic who has covered the Cardinals in some fashion since they arrived, and Theo Mackie, the Republic’s Cardinals beat writer who writes the Red Sea Report newsletter. They talked about the team’s troubles in the past, and about what the present and the future might hold. Fans are more than ready for something to be excited about.
