While those two were out, Austin Reaves stepped up in a massive way. Reaves had shown off his impressive scoring ability through the first four seasons of his career, but he’s been a different beast in 2025. Back-to-back nights with 51 and 41 points took the basketball world by storm, and got Lakers fans thinking whether they truly need James; especially since Doncic returned from injury and immediately put up 44 points.
Could LeBron James jeopardize Lakers chemistry with return from injury?
Aside from Doncic and Reaves’ on-court performances, it’s been their off-court chemistry that has Lakers fans feeling incredibly hopeful for the future. The two seem to be great friends, trading playful jabs through the media and supporting each other whenever possible. While those two are having the time of their lives, James looks to have his mind on other things.
Fans have noticed that James doesn’t seem too engaged with his teammates, and some fans didn’t love that he showed up late to a Lakers game a day before arriving early for a World Series game. Many believe that James’ impending return to the court could affect the chemistry Doncic and Reaves have developed.
Especially with both playing so well, it’s fair to wonder how much of a backseat they will take with LeBron on the court. James is a ball-dominant player, but Doncic and Reaves are dominating with the ball in their hands. It’s a bit of a conundrum for head coach JJ Redick.
