Sixers Big Man Weighs in on the Conversation around JJ Redick and Doc Rivers

Sixers Big Man shared his thoughts on his former coach on JJ Redick, Doc Rivers Discourse

Spencer Hawes shares his thoughts JJ Redick/Doc Rivers debate.

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard JJ Redick set the NBA world on fire Tuesday following a tirade about Doc Rivers. Since he shared his thoughts on his former coach during an appearance on First Take, countless people have weighed in.

One of the first people to clap back at Redick was another former Sixer, Patrick Beverley. The two exchanged blows on social media after the veteran point guard came to the defense of his current coach. Later that day, Austin Rivers also chimed in on the discourse.

While on NBA Today, Austin came to the defense of his father. He also pointed out that Redick had some of the best years of his career while playing for Doc on the LA Clippers.

Following Austin’s remarks, NBA journeyman Spencer Hawes also decided to get in on the action. He feels that only career Doc saved was Austin’s by getting the Clippers to sign him to keep him in the league.

Hawes was a lottery pick in 2007, and bounced around the NBA for the better part of a decade. Among his stops was the Sixers, where he played from 2011 to 2014.

As for Rivers’ comments, one can argue Redick had his best seasons after he left Doc and Clippers. Of his 15 years in the league, his two highest-scoring years were during his tenure with the Sixers. Redick was an ideal complement for Joel Embiid, and it resulted in him averaging over 17 PPG across two seasons.

All this has stemmed from Doc’s rough start during his time as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. Through his first ten games, the team has posted a record of 3-7.

76ers Lose Multiple Primetime Broadcast Spots in Future

With the 2023-2024 NBA season reaching its final stretch following the All-Star break, it’s clear which teams are playing for something significant.

Knowing some games might be more interesting to the public than others, the NBA has made some broadcast changes to future games, with several tweaks directly affecting the Philadelphia 76ers.

VS. GRIZZLIES

The first change comes on Wednesday, March 6. The Sixers’ home matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies was initially expected to be broadcast on ESPN. Instead, the network will replace that game with the Los Angeles Clippers’ road game against the Houston Rockets.

While the Grizzlies were among the Western Conference’s most intriguing young teams over the last couple of seasons, they have struggled to remain in the playoff picture this year. Returning from the break, the Grizzlies are just 20-36 on the year, which places them 13th in the West.

The Rockets might not be much better, but the league figures that another return to H-Town for James Harden might be a more interesting matchup than two out-of-conference opponents with key stars out battling on a Wednesday night.

VS. KNICKS

On Sunday, March 10, the Sixers find themselves elevated to primetime with a changed tip-off. Replacing the Cleveland Cavaliers versus Brooklyn Nets on ESPN, the Sixers will tip-off against the New York Knicks at 7:00 PM ET. That game will be the third battle between the Atlantic Division rivals following Thursday’s matchup.

VS. HEAT

On Thursday, April 4, the Sixers were initially set to have their matchup against the Miami Heat broadcasted on TNT. However, the league will replace that matchup with a game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks.

As for ESPN Radio, the Sixers-Heat matchup won’t be covered on there as well. Instead, the Denver Nuggets’ matchup on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers will get the nod.
