“He plays the game how I’ve always wanted to inspire the next generation to play the game,” LeBron James said. “There’s nothing predetermined. If two guys are on you, it’s a numbers game. If you have the advantage and there’s a guy that can’t guard you, or if you’re able to beat him and another defender collapses, I can make the reads and pass the ball before the play even happens.”

Doncic’s ability to think ahead and create opportunities for his teammates has been a key factor in the Lakers’ success. LeBron highlighted how the 26-year-old guard’s basketball IQ allows him to elevate those around him, drawing a comparison to some of the great facilitators in NBA history.

“I’ve always loved players who instill so much confidence in their teammates that they make them believe they’re better than they are. Steve Nash did that. Luka Doncic has done that for seven years. Chris Paul did the same in New Orleans. I don’t go to the NBA Finals in 2006 if I’m not able to make my teammates believe they’re greater than what they are. That kind of leadership makes people willing to run through a wall for you.”
LeBron also took a moment to reflect on Doncic’s journey, acknowledging the experiences that shaped him into the player he is today.

“He learned how to inspire people growing up in Slovenia, then went to Madrid and played at a professional level since he was 13 or 14 years old. He brought that same mentality, that same game, to the NBA from day one.”
Growing up playing professionally in Europe gave Doncic a level of poise and basketball IQ that most young players simply don’t have.
