Star Guard Affirms to Sign a $2.8 million deal with the Sixers after buyout from Hornets

Breaking: After the Hornets’ buyout, Star Guard declares he will sign a $2.8 million contract with the Sixers

that the guard will sign a $2.8 million deal with the Sixers.

Villanova grad Kyle Lowry is headed back to Philadephia.

As has been expected, Lowry is negotiating a buyout from the Charlotte Hornets, and once he clears waivers, he will sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. While ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was on the story, Lowry and his agents made it official.

Lowry averaged 8.2 points and four assists a game this season for Miami (and he’s still a master at drawing charges), but he had fallen out of Erik Spoelstra’s rotation. Lowry was traded to the Hornets as part of the Terry Rozier deal and it was expected he would be bought out and sign in Philly.

With the Sixers, he becomes a veteran backup for Tyrese Maxey along with Cameron Payne (it will be interesting to see how Nick Nurse divides up those minutes). Lowry brings a championship pedigree to a team trying to reach that level, and he is a high-IQ player who is good in the locker room. That said, at age 37, he fell out of the Heat rotation for a reason, and if Nurse has to lean too heavily into Lowry, that’s not a good sign.

The 37-year-old is a six-time All-Star and only arrived at the Hornets last month as part of a trade involving Terry Rozier, who moved the other way to Miami Heat.
An agreement was made between Charlotte and Lowry that he would not take to the court until after the trade deadline.
It is reported that Lowry had $10.6 million left on his $29.7 million deal for the 2023/24 season ahead of his Hornets buyout.
Lowry will add competition for Buddy Hield at the 76ers, who will look to continue their push for the play-offs in the absence of Joel Embiid, currently recovering from knee surgery.
It was a successful outing last time out for the 76ers, who ended a four-match losing streak with a 119-113 victory against the Washington Wizards on Saturday.
Tyrese Maxey and Buddy Hield were the leading protagonists for the 76ers after scoring 28 and 23 points respectively, while Rookie Ricky Council IV added 19 points and 10 rebounds.
“He was big time,” said Maxey in quotes published by AP of team-mate Council. “He balled. Defensively, offensively, energy-wise. He got some big buckets down the stretch. I’m proud of him.”
The 76ers will hope to continue their winning momentum against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.
