Projected Alabama’s 2024 depth chart after A-Day spring game

Alabama’s position of needs came into greater focus during Saturday’s scrimmage in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

With 15 spring practices now complete — including Saturday’s A-Day scrimmage in Bryant-Denny Stadium — most Alabama players have a better idea of where they stand on the depth chart entering fall camp in August. Alabama coaches also have a better idea of what positions are areas of need for the upcoming season.

With the transfer portal set to re-open Tuesday, there will be more roster movement to finalize the group that will hit the field for Alabama in the fall.

For now, here is a look at Alabama’s depth chart as we’ve interpreted it Saturday and what we learned this spring:

Quarterback: Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, Dylan Lonergan, Austin MackAnalysis: The order of 1-2-3-4 at this position was clear-cut by the reps Saturday. Mack was the fourth quarterback to see the field and played mostly with walk-ons for his first series — and against walk-ons defensively.

Even though Mack was part of Washington last season and redshirted, he is still only 17 and does not turn 18 until June 5. At this point, he still seems like very much a developmental prospect for Kalen DeBoer.

That brings the focus onto Milroe, Simpson and Lonergan. On Saturday, Milroe went 3-of-9 for 100 yards, connecting with Germie Bernard on a deep ball but having a few passes fall incomplete later. “He’s putting the ball where it needed to be — we just got to make the plays,” DeBoer told ESPN afterward.

That’s the difference between the first part of the scrimmage and the second part is just making the catches.

That is hard when you’re putting the ball where it needs to be, and the ball is on the ground.” Simpson (7-of-12 for 102 yards) and Lonergan (8-of-12 for 67 yards) both had smoother stat lines but it wasn’t an overwhelming day for the passing game overall.

The big question is whether Alabama still has all four quarterbacks when it begins fall camp in August. Simpson risks being “stuck” at Alabama until December in a third season of a backup role if he stays, but the upside to potentially become the starting quarterback at Alabama — at some point — is still on the table for him.

Running back: Justice Haynes, Jam Miller, Richard Young, Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley
