The Cardinals seem Reticent to pursue these Aces unless a ‘Shocking Scenario’ Transpires

It sounds like the Cardinals may be done adding starting pitching this offseason

The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the most active teams in an otherwise sluggish offseason.

St. Louis has already added three new starting pitchers to its rotation: Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson. The Cardinals went into the summer hunting for three starters and have already found them.

There has been some rumblings that the Cardinals would be active in the trade market to add another top-of-the-rotation starter, but St. Louis reportedly won’t pursue Dylan Cease, Corbin Burnes, or Tyler Glasnow unless there is a “shocking development,” according to MLB.com’s John Denton.

“The Cardinals’ cooldown was a sign of what’s to come from now until the start of Spring Training,” Denton said. “In many ways, St. Louis is content with the rotation following the additions of Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. And, barring a shocking development, they likely won’t make another play at a starting pitcher despite potential aces Dylan Cease, Corbin Burnes and Tyler Glasnow’s reported availability on the trade front.”

St. Louis has been linked in some way to Cease, Burnes, and Glasnow. They are like the best pitchers that could be traded this offseason and could make sense for the Cardinals. St. Louis has added three starters, but some have wondered if the club would pursue another top arm.

At this point, it seems like that won’t be the case. We have a long offseason ahead of us and anything could happen, but it seems like the Cardinals have finished building the rotation out.

The St. Louis Cardinals are among the many teams looking to add pitching depth to their roster this offseason and the competition is stiff.

Big market teams such as the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers are all looking for pitching this winter.

Recent reports indicate that the Yankees are eyeing to sign a former St. Louis reliever — making a reunion much more difficult for the Cardinals.

“The Yankees will need to replenish their bullpen, and a league source told The Athletic that the team has interest in signing right-hander Jordan Hicks,” The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner reported Wednesday.

Hicks posted a 3-9 record with a 3.29 ERA, 81-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .231 batting average against, and 1.36 WHIP in 65 2/3 innings pitched for the Cardinals and Blue Jays in 2023.
