Conor Gallagher deal and £25m wonderkid signs – Tottenham’s dream end to transfer window
Tottenham have been one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this January.
Tottenham have already enjoyed an impressive January transfer window, securing moves for players who have strengthened Ange Postecoglou’s squad in key areas. The permanent arrival of centre-back Radu Dragusin will prevent a lack of options in the area if Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven miss any more action, while the loan capture of Timo Werner was an astute piece of business.
Having not ruled Spurs out of a late Premier League title charge, Postecoglou might want a couple more signings to complete his preferred starting 11 in the second half of the season. The Australian will be backed by Daniel Levy, with evidence that the club’s money is being well spent after a successful summer window.
Having signed Dragusin and Werner, attention might turn to Spurs’ midfield. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been linked with an exit since the summer, and his departure would pave the way for a late pursuit of Conor Gallagher.
Chelsea are likely to demand a hefty fee for their vice-captain, widely believed to be in the region of £40m. For the Blues, Gallagher’s exit would represent pure profit as he came through their academy – helping the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to offset expenditure which looks good on the club’s accounts.
It is why, despite Gallagher being a key player under Mauricio Pochettino this season, Chelsea are willing to allow the England international to leave. Spurs could take advantage of the situation in the final nine days of the transfer window.
Spurs will not be short of midfielders come the end of the winter, with Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma returning from the Africa Cup of Nations over the coming weeks. However, the addition of Gallagher would surely propel the north Londoners, who are fifth, back among the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
The 23-year-old’s pressing ability and dynamism make him a prototype Postecoglou midfielder. Having taken on captaincy duties at Chelsea, he would also bring leadership qualities to a young team who have lost big personalities in Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris over the past six months.
Gallagher’s omission from Chelsea’s line-up to face Middlesbrough in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final raised eyebrows. A sceptical eye might see it as Pochettino planning for life without the former Crystal Palace loanee.
