Unexpected Move: Golden State Warriors’ All-Star Forward Admits Planning Recruitment of 2X MVP 1 Year Before…

Kevin Durant’s move to the Bay back in 2016 shook the landscape of the NBA and established the Golden State Warriors as a dynasty. Turns out, All-Star forward Draymond Green played a part in getting the two-time MVP a year before he actually joined the team.

After spending nine years playing for the Seattle Supersonics and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Durant intended to test free agency back in 2016. This comes after his contract expired, leaving Russell Westbrook as the only All-Star left in OKC.

Almost every team with the cap space or capability to acquire the All-Star forward scrambled to sign him, such as the Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs, among others.

But among all those options, Durant chose to sign with the team that defeated him during the postseason prior to his free agency – the Golden State Warriors. This resulted in a juggernaut of a squad that had Durant, Green, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andre Iguodala in it.

Golden State Warriors All-Star Forward Draymond Green Admitted Recruitment of Kevin Durant Before He Actually Signed With The Team

By that point, the Warriors went on to defeat a Cleveland Cavaliers team led by LeBron James two years in a row to win a pair of championships. But before that happened, Green revealed in an episode of 7PM in Brooklyn that he played a role in recruiting Durant to sign up with Golden State a year before he actually did.

As it stands, Green’s decision to take a lesser amount of money a year before Durant’s free agency inadvertently helped Golden State lock the All-Star forward down. With that tiny lapse on his part, the Warriors were able to sign Durant to a contract of his own in 2016.

While things didn’t really end well for Green and Durant, the time they spent together in Golden State will always be remembered for the championships they won. In any case, the former’s lapse in his contract back then was a fortunate mistake for the Warriors.
