The Golden State Warriors could have a very big offseason this summer and may look very different when 2024-25 kicks off in a few months.

In fact, they already made one big change.

According to Anthony Slater, the Warriors have hired Jon Phelps as cap strategist and team counsel.

Before coming to the Warriors, Phelps had been with the Detroit Pistons since 2014 and served as the team’s Senior Director of Basketball Strategy.

Why is this such an important hiring for the Warriors and what sort of impact could it have on the team?

The team has paid a lot in luxury tax payments over the last few seasons and they want to change that.

This summer, they could say goodbye to Klay Thompson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent soon.

This could be a big turning point for the team and they could lose Thompson and make some other changes too.

Phelps would be a part of any roster decisions.

Not only does he have a lot of experience dealing with salary caps and negotiating deals, but he will also bring a fresh perspective to the team.

His opinions could lead the way for the alterations that the team needs, as hard as they may be.

The Warriors weren’t able to reach the playoffs this year and they definitely don’t want that to happen again next season.

Therefore, any changes that Phelps and the front office make have to be the right ones.

During his time with the Pistons, the team never had to pay the luxury tax.

That is a sign that Phelps knows what he is doing and could bring great things to the Warriors.
