What remains true for Eddie Howe to be convinced about Spuerstar at Newcastle

Midfield has been an issue for Newcastle United all season.

While Lewis Miley’s rapid-fire ascension into a genuine first-team player at Newcastle has been stunning to watch, it has papered over the cracks somewhat.

Indeed, in an ideal world, a team with realistic hopes of chasing Champions League qualification before a ball was kicked this season would not be having to rely on a teenager so often, as good as he may be.

Sandro Tonali’s ban stretching into next season has been a major blow. While the Italian and Bruno Guimaraes had not quite struck up the perfect partnership before his ban, there were promising moments from the former AC Milan midfielder.

Now, there is huge pressure on Tonali to return to form once his ban is up. Ivan Toney, after all, has proven players can hit the ground running after spending so long on the sidelines.

Certainly, it seems Eddie Howe still has hope.

Sandro Tonali: What Eddie Howe is convinced about at Newcastle

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope on X (formerly Twitter), Howe both was and still is convinced Tonali is the solution to Newcastle’s midfield woe.

His ability to keep a hold of the ball is said to be valued by Howe and there is hope he will fix the issues upon his return.

In lieu of a noted defensive midfielder, having the ball to stop so many turnovers is obviously crucial.

Sandro Tonali: Huge pressure on Newcastle star

Sadly for Newcastle, seeing Tonali and Guimaraes play together again may be unlikely given the Brazilian is seemingly constantly linked with a move away.

Joelinton’s future is also in doubt, adding yet more pressure onto Tonali.

Though there were reasons to get excited during his first few games at Newcastle, even the most optimistic of supporters would surely struggle to suggest everything was perfect.

Clearly, adapting to life in a new league cannot be easy and time should be afforded. Because of the ban, however, that luxury may no longer be afforded.

Tonali needs to repay Newcastle’s trust in him.
