The Ohio State football team will continue to build its recruiting class over the next few months. They continue to schedule official visits for later in the summer as they try to add to the class. Ryan Day is steadfast in his desire to add the majority of his players from the high school ranks.
Last month, Ohio State got a commitment from an offensive lineman in the state of Ohio. Since then, they have yet to receive any commitments. At the end of the month, the Buckeyes have set up several official visits, from which they are hoping to gain some commitments.
However, not all is rosy on the recruiting trail. On Thursday, the Buckeyes were no longer in the lead for a five-star recruit. Now, they have had more struggles on the recruiting trail, as they have lost out on a recruit that they were favored to land for months.
Ohio State football loses out on tight end recruit
For the last few months, the Ohio State Buckeyes had been favored to land four-star tight end recruit Brock Williams out of Texas. On Friday, he decided not to go with the Buckeyes, instead picking the Texas Longhorns for his commitment.
This is the second time in as many days that Ohio State has gotten some bad news on the recruiting front. Right now, they only have 11 commitments for the 2027 recruiting class. It’s still too early to panic for fans right now, but it has been a while since something good has happened.
If Ohio State is still sitting at the same number of commitments in this class by the end of July, then there is a reason to be concerned. Until then, Ohio State needs to just focus on nailing the official visits that they have scheduled up to this point and go from there.
Ohio State football doesn’t recruit tight ends well
The Buckeyes don’t seem to recruit tight ends super well from the high school ranks. This is despite the fact that they had two tight ends drafted for the first time in the same draft. However, both of those tight ends were transfers. Neither of them went to Ohio State straight out of high school.
Keenan Bailey has struggled to add recruits at that position over the last couple of years. While Ohio State doesn’t use the tight end position a lot as a primary pass-catching weapon, it still should do better at grabbing tight ends, especially in Arthur Smith’s new system.
Ohio State added two more tight ends from the Transfer Portal this offseason, so they don’t necessarily need to grab tight ends from high school. Maybe they will approach that position as one they develop using the portal from now on. Still, it’s not good to lose recruits they have been favored for.
Of course, the Buckeyes still are going to try to approach the recruiting trail aggressively over the next few months. Signing Day is still a few months away.
